Puppies from The Lexington Humane Society

For the past two years Alice Schaaf, Upper School College Counseling and Public Speaking, has been bringing her Lexington Humane Society foster animals to school for socialization purposes. Rachel Holsinger, Upper School Science, welcomes them to her classroom where students learn about the Humane Society, foster care, and humane issues. As a result the animals are more adoptable because of the compassion they receive from our community. For more information regarding the Humane Society and/or adopting a pet, contact Ms. Schaaf at aschaaf@sayreschool.org, 254-1361, extension 254.

Preschool and Lower School utilize the Responsive Classroom® approachThe Lower School faculty and staff attended a motivating day of training  to learn the philosophy and strategies of Responsive Classroom.  Building on the strengths already inherent in Sayre Lower School, the Responsive Classroom approach is designed to foster the social, emotional, and academic growth of students within the context of a safe and caring community.  Cooperation, responsibility, empathy, and self control are taught throughout the day in order for students to be successful both academically and socially.  Teachers are energized and are creatively finding ways to incorporate what they have learned, with a plan in place to continue learning through additional readings, videos, and systematically sharing ideas with their colleagues this fall.

Pam and Josh ShermanAfter 18 years Pam Sherman has retired as the Lower School Assistant Director. Following the special program on Friday, May 21, a stunning 6’ dogwood tree was planted in front of the Johnson McCoy Building facing the Lower School in Mrs. Sherman’s honor.

Organized by Lower School parents, the dedication was a surprise to Mrs. Sherman, who will be enjoying time with her family in her retirement. Along with teaching the Pre-K 4 class, Mrs. Sherman also served as Parent Association President,  and is the mother of Sayre alumni Josh ‘99 and Justin ’04.

We will all miss Mrs. Sherman’s attention to detail, ability to nurture with compassion, and winning style. Mrs. Sherman, know that our very best wishes and thoughts go with you.
